“O you who believe, save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones. Over which are (appointed) angels, stern and severe, who flinch not (from executing) the commands they receive from God, but do (precisely what) they are commanded.”

 (Qur'an 66:6)

Hell (in Arabic, Jahannam) has already been created. Many people will enter into it on Judgement Day. Hell is mentioned often in the Qur'an and hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him). According to the New Testament, Jesus (peace be upon him) also spoke about Hell several times too, e.g. "And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:42)

Verses In The Qur'an About Hell

''It will be commanded, ‘Seize him and bind him. Then drive him into the Hellfire. Then in a chain whose length is seventy cubits bind him.’ For indeed, he would not believe in Allah, Most Great, and would not encourage the feeding of the poor. So he has no friend here this Day.'' (69:30-35)

''Indeed the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, dwelling therein forever. It will not be lightened for them, and they will be overwhelmed there in despair. And We have not wronged them, but it is they who have wronged [themselves].'' (43:74-76)

''Then it will be said to those who were unjust, ‘Taste the eternal punishment. Are you recompensed except for what you used to earn?'' (10:52)

''But when there comes the Greatest Event – the Day when man will remember what he strove for and the Hellfire will be brought forth for [all] to see – then for him who had transgressed and preferred the life of this world, indeed Hellfire will be his shelter.'' (79: 34-39)

''Soon I will cast him into Hell Fire. And what will explain to you what is Hellfire? Nothing does it allow to endure, and nothing does it leave alone! Darkening and changing the colour of man! Over it are nineteen (angels as keepers of Hell).'' (74:26-30)

''For all will be (ranked) by degrees according to what they did.'' (6:132)

'Those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, ‘Pray to your Lord to lighten for us the penalty for a day (at least).’ They will say, ‘Did there not come to you your messengers with clear signs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will reply, ‘Then pray as you like. But the prayer of those without faith is not but in error.’'' (40:49-50)

''And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, ‘Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?’ They will say, ‘Yes, but the word (meaning the decree) of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers.'' (35:71)

''Those are the ones, who have exchanged the Hereafter for the gains of this worldly life. The punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be aided.'' (2:86)

Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

The Prophet mentioned the (Hell) Fire and sought refuge (with Allah) from it, and turned his face to the other side. He mentioned the (Hell) Fire again and took refuge (with Allah) from it and turned his face to the other side. (Shu'ba, the sub-narrator, said, "I have no doubt that the Prophet repeated it twice.") The Prophet then said, "(O people!) Save yourselves from the (Hell) Fire even if with one half of a date fruit (given in charity), and if this is not available, then (save yourselves) by saying a good pleasant friendly word." (Bukhari)

"…The people of Hell are five: the weak who lack the power to (avoid evil); the (carefree) who pursue (everything irrespective of whether it is good or evil) and who have no concern for their families and their wealth; the dishonest people whose greed cannot be concealed even in the case of minor things; and those who betray you, morning and evening, with regard to your family and your property.'' He also mentioned misers, liars, and those who are in the habit of abusing people and using obscene, foul language. (Muslim)

Some Examples Of Those Who Will Enter The Fire:

* Those attributing partners to God:

''Verily, you (unbelievers) and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hellfire, You will surely come to it. If those had (truly) been gods, they would not have come to it. But all will abide therein eternally.'' ( Qur'an 21:98-99)

''And the Fierce Fire will be brought out before those straying in evil, and it will be said to them, ‘Where are those you worshipped besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?’ Then they will be thrown into it (the Hellfire) on their faces – they and those straying in evil and the soldiers of Iblees, all together.'' (Qur'an 26: 91-95)

* Those who have rejected Islam:

''For those who reject their Lord (and Cherisher) is the Penalty of Hell: and evil is (such) destination.'' (67:6)

''And woe that Day to the deniers (of truth). [It will be said], ‘Depart to a shadow [of smoke ascending] in three columns, [which yields] no shade of coolness and is of no use against the fierce blaze.’” (Qur'an 77:28-32)

“[It will be said to the two angels], ‘Throw into Hellfire every obstinate rejecter [of Allah] – who prevented good, transgressed, and doubted, who set up another god besides Allah – throw him into the severe punishment.’” (Qur'an 50:24-26)

* Some Muslims, who will be punished for their sins:

The dwellers of the Hellfire who possess a little bit of faith will gain entrance into Paradise after being punished for their sins.

''Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with him; but He forgiveth anything else to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed.'' (4:48)

Individuals Made Mention Of

Pharaoh - ''And We sent Musa with Our clear [signs] and an authority manifest unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they followed the command of Pharaoh. And the command of Pharaoh was no right guide. He will go before his people on the Day of Judgment and lead them into the Fire. And how evil will be the place to which they are led. And they are followed by a curse in this [life] and on the Day of Judgment. And evil is the gift which will be given [to them].” (Qur'an 11:96-99)

Prophets Noah and Lots wives - “Allah has given an example of those who disbelieve: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them; so they [the two prophets] did not benefit them [the wives] before Allah at all, and they were told, ‘Enter the Fire with those who enter.’” (Qur'an 66:10)

There is a saying of Prophet Muhammad narrated by 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (r.a.): Allah's Apostle said, "A lady was punished because of a cat which she had imprisoned till it died. She entered the (Hell) Fire because of it, for she neither gave it food nor water as she had imprisoned it, nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth." (Bukhari)

A Warning To Women

Ibn Abbas (r.a.) stated: “The Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘I looked into the Hellfire, and the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful.’ It was asked, ‘Did they disbelieve in [i.e. were ungrateful to] Allah?’ He replied, ‘They were ungrateful to their husbands and were ungrateful for favours and the good deeds done for them. If you had always been good to one of them and then she saw something in you not to her liking, she would say, ‘I have never seen any good from you at all.” (Bukhari)

The Vastness of Jahannam

Abu Hurairah (r.a.) reported: “While we were in the company of Allah’s Messenger (pbuh), we heard a terrible sound. Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said, ‘Do you know what that sound is?’ When we answered, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said. “That is a stone which was thrown into Hell seventy years ago and has been constantly falling until now when it finally reached the bottom.’” (Muslim)

Ibn Mas'ud (r.a.) reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “Hell will be brought on that Day. It will have seventy thousand reins with seventy thousand angels drawing it by each rein.” (Muslim)

''Then when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no more relationships between them that day, nor will one ask after another! Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy - they will attain salvation: But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls; in Hell will they abide. The Fire will burn their faces, and they will therein grin, with their lips displaced.''  (Qur'an 23:93-104)
