A Difficult Predicament Indeed

 One of our pious predecessors, Thabit Ibn Nu’man (rahmatullah alaih), was hungry and tired as he was passing through a garden that bordered a river. He was so hungry to the extent that he could hear his stomach growling and his eyes became focused on the fruits he saw on the various trees of the garden. In a fit of desperation, he forgot himself and extended his hand to an apple that was within reach. He ate half of it and then drank water from the river. Then he became overcome by guilt, despite the fact that he had only eaten because of dire need. He said to himself, “Woe unto me! How can I eat someone else’s fruits without his permission? I make it compulsory upon myself not to leave this place until I find the owner of this garden and ask him to forgive me for having eaten one of his apples.”

 After a brief search, he found the owner’s house. He knocked on the door and the owner of the garden came out and asked him what he wanted. Thabit Ibn Nu’man said, “I entered your garden that borders the river, I took this apple and I ate half of it. Then I remembered that it does not belong to me, so I ask you now to excuse me for having eaten it and to forgive me for my mistake.”

 The man replied, “On one condition only will I forgive you for your mistake.” Thabit Ibn Nu’man asked, “And what is that condition?” He said, “That you marry my daughter.” Thabit Ibn Nu’man said, “I will marry her.” The man said, “However, heed to this; indeed my daughter is blind, she does not see, mute, she does not speak and deaf, she does not hear.”

 Thabit Ibn Nu’man began to ponder over his situation; a difficult predicament indeed, did he find himself  to be in now; what should he do? Do not get out of it, thought Thabit Ibn Nu'man. He realised that to be tested by such a woman, to take care of her, and to serve her, are all better than to eat from the foul matter of the Hell-Fire as a recompense for the apple that he ate. After all, the days of this world are few and limited.

 Thus, he accepted the condition to marry the girl, seeking his reward from Allaah (Subḥānahu wa ta'āla). He was nonetheless, somewhat anxious in the days prior to the marriage. He thought, how can I have relations with a woman who neither speaks nor sees nor hears? He became so miserable that he almost wished for the earth to swallow him up before the appointed date. Yet despite such apprehension, he placed his complete trust upon Allaah (swt) and he said, “There is neither might nor power except from Allaah (swt). Indeed to Allaah do we belong and to Him do we return.”

 On the day of his marriage, he saw her for the first time. She stood up before him and said, “Peace, be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allaah (swt).” When he saw her grace and beauty, he was reminded of what he would see when he would imagine the fair maidens of Paradise. After a brief pause, he said, “What is this? She indeed speaks, hears and sees.” He then told her what her father had said earlier.

 She said, “My father has spoken the truth. He said I was mute because I do not speak any forbidden word and I have never spoken to a man who is not lawful to me. I am also indeed deaf in the sense that I have never sat in a gathering in which there is backbiting, slander, or false and vain speech. Additionally, I am blind in the sense that I have never looked upon a man who is not permissible for me.”

 Dear readers! Reflect and learn a lesson from the story of this pious man and this pious woman and of how Allaah (swt) brought them together. The fruit of this noble marriage was the birth of a child who grew up to fill the earth with knowledge. Yes, their son was none other than the great Imam Abu Haneefah Numan Ibn Thabit (rahmatullah alaih)!

Poem by Na'ima B. Robert

You try
To excise
Circumcise
The part of you
That loves too strongly,...
The part of you that still has tears to weep,
The part of you that still loses sleep,
The part of you that still holds on,
The part of you that must be strong,
The part of you foolish enough to cling to hope
In the face of hopelessness.

Cut it out,
Shred it,
Watch it shrivel and die.
Bury it,
Mourn it,
Emerge with dry eyes.
Hard,
Calloused,
Deathly triumphant.
Alone,
Aloof,
Though that dull ache is constant.
For you have killed the love
And, with it, a part of you,
But you feel that it is worth it,
For you know this to be true:
Walking away is but the easy road,
Sometimes it hurts too much to care.
Sometimes it's safer to bury that love you feel
Than to see your soul stripped bare.
Maybe, for once, you want to give up,
For once, you're not the hero,
For once you agree to fail the test,
For once you let that last chance go.
Maybe you'll throw up your hands
And admit defeat
And wish for the eternal sleep
To sink, unhindered,
Into the abyss,
The abyss of dark forgetfulness.
Maybe.
Or maybe, my sister,
You will cry those tears
And rise, in spite of all your tears,
Rise, rise upon broken wings
Knowing that He hears everything
Knowing that He hears your pleas
And His Promise is true: with hardship, comes ease.

*For every mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Keep Walking by Yasmin Mogahed

Keep Walking
By: Yasmin Mogahed

Every day I get closer to our Meeting.
I feel like I’ve been walking this path for a thousand years
towards You…
and yet I’m still not there.
So close, and yet so far still
But I keep walking,
despite the tears,
despite the wind,
despite the skinned knees and broken bones,
despite the bruises and scars that make this heart what it is today,
I keep walking…
toward You.
There’s only one direction,
one direction:
towards You.
From You, to You.
I have nothing else.
Nothing.
That is my poverty.
I keep walking
because behind every sun’s setting is a rising,
Behind every storm is a Refuge,
Behind every fall is a rise,
Behind every tear is a cleansing of the eyes.
And in every spot you’ve ever been stabbed, is a healing,
and the creation of skin stronger than it was.
I keep walking
because wallahi I have nothing but Your mercy.
I have nothing but Your promise
Your words
Your promise
that:

84:6
“Oh mankind, indeed you are ever toiling on towards your Lord- painfully toiling,- but you shall meet Him.” (84:6)

Terrorism - Transgressing The Limits

Allah says in the Qur'an:  "if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people..."  (Qur'an 5:32)

"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. (Qur'an 2:190)

Explanation of this verse from Ibn Kathir's Tafsir: {but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors.}  This Ayah means, `Fight for the sake of Allah and do not be transgressors,' such as, by committing prohibitions. Al-Hasan Al-Basri stated that transgression (indicated by the Ayah), "includes mutilating the dead, theft (from the captured goods), killing women, children and old people who do not participate in warfare, killing priests and residents of houses of worship, burning down trees and killing animals without real benefit.'' This is also the opinion of Ibn `Abbas, `Umar bin `Abdul-`Aziz, Muqatil bin Hayyan and others.

Sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Ibn `Abbas says: The Messenger of Allah, when dispatching his troops, would tell them, " ..Do not behave treacherously, nor misappropriate war-booty, nor mutilate [those whom you kill], nor kill children, nor the people in cloisters." [Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi (who graded it hasan sahih ]).

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw the corpse of a woman who had been slain in one of the raids, and he disapproved of it and forbade the killing of women and children. (Maliks Muwatta, Book 021, Hadith Number 009.)

It is narrated by Ibn 'Umar that a woman was found killed in one of these battles; so the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children (Muslim, Book 019, Hadith Number 4320)

Some Examples of The Mercy Of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

The Conquest of Mecca

..In 630 C.E. the Prophet Muhammad decided to take an army of 10,000 towards Mecca. Once the Muslims had reached Mecca, the leaders of Quraysh surrendered. As a result the Prophet Muhammad announced:

Those who shelter in the Ka’ba are safe; those who shelter in the house of Abu Sufyan are safe, and those who remain confined to their houses are also safe.

Abu Sufayan was a leader of Quraysh and one of the ardent enemies of the Prophet Muhammad. The Meccans were afraid about the impending conquest of their city because the Arabs had lived by the law of retaliation and there was a fear that Muslims would take revenge for the persecution of the Muslims and the losses in subsequent battles. When the Prophet Muhammad and the Muslims entered the area of the Kaba, he announced clemency for everyone in Mecca who no longer wished to fight the Muslims:

This day no reproach shall be on you. God will forgive you; He is the Most Merciful of the Merciful. You can go away!

Many of the Meccans, who were expecting some sort of punishment, were surprised by the Prophet’s statement and some decided to become Muslim. Thus, the conquest of Mecca was bloodless and ended years of warfare and violence between Quraysh and the Muslims.

This event is significant for Muslims because it demonstrates the character of the Prophet Muhammad. He could have exacted revenge, in accordance with the traditions of the Arabs, but instead he showed mercy on the Meccans. This is an important reminder for Muslims even to the present day about how conflict should be addressed. Finally, the conquest was a defining moment because it established Islam on the Arabian Peninsula, from there it spread to become a major world religion. Enemy Becomes A Friend

http://islamstory.com/en/node/30006

Sunday, 7 October 2012

1) "Islam" means "Peace through the submission to God".

2) "Muslim" means "anyone or anything that submits itself to the will of God".

3) Islam is not a cult. Its followers number over 1.5 billion worldwide. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it is considered to be one of the three Abrahamic traditions.

4) There are five pillars of practice in Islam. These practices must be undertaken with the best of effort in order to be considered a true Muslim: A) Shahadah - declaration of faith in the oneness of God and that Muhammad is the last prophet of God. B) Formal prayer five times a day. C) Fasting during the daylight hours in the month of Ramadan. D) Poor-due "tax" - 2.5% of one's savings given to the needy at the end of each year. E) Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once, if physically and financially able.

5) There are six articles of faith in Islam. These are the basic beliefs that one must have in order to be considered a true Muslim. They are belief in: A) the One God. B) all the prophets of God. C) the original scriptures revealed to Prophets Moses, David, Jesus, and Muhammad. D) the angels. E) the Day of Judgment and the Hereafter. F) the divine decree (or destiny).

6) Islam is a complete way of life that governs all facets of life: moral, spiritual, social, political, economical, intellectual, etc.

7) Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. To become Muslim, a person of any race or culture must say a simple statement, the shahadah, that bears witness to the belief in the One God and that Prophet Muhammad was the last prophet of God.

8) "Allah" is an Arabic word that means "God". Muslims also believe that "Allah" is the personal name of God.

9) Allah is not the God of Muslims only. He is the God of all people and all creation. Just because people refer to God using different terms does not mean that they are different gods. Spanish people refer to God as "Dios" and French people refer to God as "Dieu", yet they are all the same God. Interestingly, most Arab Jews and Arab Christians refer to God as "Allah". And the word Allah in Arabic appears on the walls of many Arab churches.

10) The Islamic concept of God is that He is loving, merciful, and compassionate. But Islam also teaches that He is just and swift in punishment. Nevertheless, Allah once said to Prophet Muhammad, "My mercy prevails over my wrath." Islam teaches a balance between fear and hope, protecting one from both complacency and despair.

11) Muslims believe that God has revealed 99 of His names (or attributes) in the Holy Qur'an. It is through these names that one can come to know the Creator. A few of these names are: the All-Merciful, the All-Knower, the Protector, the Provider, the Near, the First, the Last, the Hidden, and the Source of Peace.

12) Muslims believe in and acknowledge all the prophets of old, from Adam to Jesus. Muslims believe that they brought the message of peace and submission (islam) to different peoples at different times. Muslims also believe that these prophets were "muslims" because they submitted their wills to God.

13) Muslims neither worship Muhammad nor pray through him. Muslims solely worship the unseen and Omniscient Creator, Allah.

14) Muslims accept the original unaltered Torah (the Gospel of Moses) and the original Bible (the Gospel of Jesus) since they were revealed by God. However, none of those original scriptures are in existence today, in their entirety. Therefore, Muslims follow the subsequent, final, and preserved revelation of God, the Holy Qur'an.

15) The Holy Qur'an was not authored by Muhammad. It was authored by God, revealed to Muhammad, and written into physical form by his companions.

16) The Holy Qur'an has no flaws or contradictions. The original Arabic scriptures have never been changed or tampered with.

17) Actual seventh century Qur'ans, complete and intact, are on display in museums in Turkey and many other places around the world.

18) If all Qur'ans in the world today were burned and destroyed, the original Arabic would still remain. This is because millions of Muslims, called Hafiz (or "preservers") have memorized the text letter for letter from beginning to end, every word and syllable. Also, chapters from the Qur'an are precisely recited from memory by every Muslim in each of the five daily prayers.

19) Muslims do not believe in the concept of "vicarious atonement" but rather believe in the law of personal responsibility. Islam teaches that each person is responsible for his or her own actions. On the Day of Judgment Muslims believe that every person will be resurrected and will have to answer to God for their every word, thought, and deed. Consequently, a practicing Muslim is always striving to be righteous.

20) Islam was not spread by the sword. It was spread by the word (Islamic teachings) and the example of its followers. Islam teaches that there is no compulsion in religion (the Holy Qur'an 2:256 and 10:99).

21) Terrorism, unjustified violence and the killing of innocent people are absolutely forbidden in Islam. Islam is a way of life that is meant to bring peace to a society, whether its people are Muslim or not. The extreme actions of those who claim to be Muslim may be, among other things, a result of their ignorance or uncontrolled anger. Tyrant rulers and those who commit acts of terrorism in the name of Islam are simply not following Islam. These people are individuals with their own views and political agendas. Fanatical Muslims are no more representative of the true Islamic teachings than Timothy McVeigh or David Koresh are of Christianity. Extremism and fanaticism is a problem that is common to all religious groups. Anyone who thinks that all Muslims are terrorists should remember that the famous boxer Muhammad Ali, perhaps the most celebrated person of our era, is a practicing Muslim.

22) The word "jihad" does not mean "holy war". Instead, it means the inner struggle that one endures in trying to submit their will to the will of God. Some Muslims may say they are going for "jihad" when fighting in a war to defend themselves or their fellow Muslims, but they only say this because they are conceding that it will be a tremendous struggle. But there are many other forms of jihad which are more relevant to the everyday life of a Muslim such as the struggles against laziness, arrogance, stinginess, or the struggle against a tyrant ruler or against the temptation of Satan, or against one's own ego, etc.

23) Women are not oppressed in Islam. Any Muslim man that oppresses a woman is not following Islam. Among the many teachings of Prophet Muhammad that protected the rights and dignity of women is his saying, "...the best among you are those who treat their wives well." (Tirmidhi)

24) Islam grants women numerous rights in the home and in society. Among them are the right to earn money, to financial support, to an education, to an inheritance, to being treated kindly, to vote, to a dowry, to keep their maiden name, to worship in a mosque, etc., etc.

25) Muslim women wear the head-covering (hijab) in fulfillment of God's decree to dress modestly. From a practical standpoint, it serves to identify one as attempting to follow God in daily life and, therefore, protects women from unwanted advances from men. This type of modest dress has been worn by righteous women throughout history. Prominent examples are traditional Catholic Nuns, Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

26) Arranged marriages are allowed in Islam but are not required. Whereas "forced" marriages, usually stemming from cultural practice, are forbidden. Divorce is permissible, however, reconciliation is what is most encouraged. But if there are irreconcilable differences then Islam permits a fair and just divorce.

27) Islam and the "Nation of Islam" are two different religions. Islam is a religion for all races and enjoins the worship of the one unseen God who, orthodox Muslims believe, never took human form. The "Nation", on the other hand, is a movement geared towards non-whites and teaches that God appeared in the form of Fard Muhammad in 1930 and that Elijah Muhammad (a man who died in 1975) was a prophet of God. These beliefs clearly contradict the basic Islamic theology outlined in the Qur'an. The followers of "the Nation" adhere to some Islamic principles that are mixed with many other teachings that are alien to Islam. To better understand the difference between the two, read about Malcolm X, his pilgrimage to Mecca and his subsequent comments to the media. Islam teaches equality amongst all the races (Holy Qur'an 49:13).

28) All Muslims are not Arab. Islam is a universal religion and way of life which includes followers from all races of people. There are Muslims in and from virtually every country in the world. Arabs only constitute about 20% of Muslims worldwide. Indonesia has the largest concentration of Muslims with over 120 million.

29) In the five daily prayers, Muslims face the Kaaba in Mecca, Arabia. It is a cube-shaped stone structure that was originally built by Prophet Adam and later rebuilt by Prophet Abraham. Muslims believe that the Kaaba was the first house of worship on Earth dedicated to the worship of one god. Muslims do not worship the Kaaba. It serves as a central focal point for Muslims around the world, unifying them in worship and symbolizing their common belief, spiritual focus and direction. Interestingly, the inside of the Kaaba is empty.

30) The hajj is a simultaneous pilgrimage to the Kaaba made by millions of Muslims each year. It is performed to commemorate the struggles of Abraham, Ishmael and Hagar in submitting their wills to God.

Tafsir of Surah 107 - Small Kindnesses

In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy

"[Prophet], have you considered the person who denies the Judgement?
It is he who pushes aside the orphan and does not urge others to feed the needy.
So woe to those who pray
but are heedless of their prayer;
those who are all show and forbid common kindnesses. "

(107) translated by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

Tafsir by Ibn Kathir

The Tafsir of Surat Al-Ma`un (Chapter - 107
Which was revealed in Makkah
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

{Have you seen him who denies Ad-Din? That is he who repulses the orphan, And urges not the feeding of Al-Miskin. So, woe unto those performers of Salah, Those who with their Salah are Sahun.
Those who do good deeds only to be seen, And withhold Al-Ma`un.}

Allah says,
{O Muhammad! Have you seen the one who denies the Din}. Here the word Din means the Hereafter, the Recompense and the Final Reward.

{That is he who repulses the orphan,}  meaning, he is the one who oppresses the orphan and does not give him his just due. He does not feed him, nor is he kind to him.

{And urges not the feeding of Al-Miskin.} This is as Allah says, {Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity! And urge not one another on the feeding of Al-Miskin!} (89:17-18) meaning, the poor man who has nothing to sustain him and suffice his needs. Then Allah says,

{So, woe unto those performers of Salah, those who with their Salah are Sahun.} Ibn `Abbas and others have said, "This means the hypocrites who pray in public but do not pray in private.'' Thus, Allah says,

{unto those performers of Salah,} They are those people who pray and adhere to the prayer, yet they are mindless of it. This may either be referring to its act entirely, as Ibn `Abbas said, or it may be referring to performing it in its stipulated time that has been legislated Islamically. This means that the person prays it completely outside of its time.

This was said by Masruq and Abu Ad-Duha:

`Ata' bin Dinar said, "All praise is due to Allah, the One Who said, {with their Salah are Sahun.} and He did not say, `those who are absent minded in their prayer.''' It could also mean the first time of the prayer, which means they always delay it until the end of its time, or they usually do so. It may also refer to not fulfilling its pillars and conditions, and in the required manner. It could also mean performing it with humility and contemplation of its meanings. The wording of the Ayah comprises all of these meanings. However, whoever has any characteristic of this that we have mentioned then a portion of this Ayah applies to him. And whoever has all of these characteristics, then he has completed his share of this Ayah, and the hypocrisy of actions is fulfilled in him. This is just as is confirmed in the Two Sahihs that the Messenger of Allah said,

"This is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun until it is between the two horns of Shaytan. Then he stands and pecks four (Rak`ahs) and he does not remember Allah (in them) except very little."

This Hadith is describing the end of the time for the `Asr prayer, which is the middle prayer as is confirmed by a text (Hadith). This is the time in which it is disliked to pray. Then this person stands to pray it, pecking in it like the pecking of a crow. He does not have tranquility or humility in it at all. Thus, the Prophet said, "He does not remember Allah (in them) except very little." He probably only stands to pray it so that the people will see him praying, and not seeking the Face of Allah. This is just as if he did not pray at all. Allah says,

{Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.} (4:142) and Allah says here,

{Those who do good deeds only to be seen,} Imam Ahmad recorded from `Amr bin Murrah that he said, "We were sitting with Abu `Ubaydah when the people mentioned showing-off. A man known as Abu Yazid said, "I heard `Abdullah bin `Amr saying that the Messenger of Allah said,

"Whoever tries to make the people hear of his deed, Allah, the One Who hears His creation, will hear it and make him despised and degraded.''  from what is related to His statement,

{Those who do good deeds only to be seen.} is that whoever does a deed solely for Allah, but the people come to know about it, and he is pleased with that, then this is not considered showing off. Allah said:

{And withhold Al-Ma`un.} This means that they do not worship their Lord well, nor do they treat His creation well. They do not even lend that which others may benefit from and be helped by, even though the object will remain intact and be returned to them. These people are even stingier when it comes to giving Zakah and different types of charity that bring one closer to Allah. Al-Mas`udi narrated from Salamah bin Kuhayl who reported from Abu Al-`Ubaydin that he asked Ibn Mas`ud about Al-Ma`un and he said, "It is what the people give to each other, like an axe, a pot, a bucket and similar items.''

This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Al-Ma`un, and all praise and thanks are due to Allah.

Honesty and Dishonesty

Ja'far ibn Sulayman ad-Duba'i says: I heard Malik ibn Dinar saying:

"Honesty and Dishonesty wage war against each other in the heart until one of them dispells the other.
Honesty starts weak just as the date palm: a single branch appears first. If a child breaks it, its source is destroyed. If a goat eats it, its source is destroyed But if it is irrigated, it spreads. When it is irrigated further, it spreads further till it develops a strong root, it then provides shade, and then fruit that is eaten.

In like manner, honesty starts weak in the heart. The person seeks it and so Allah increases it. The person seeks it further so Allah increases it more. Allah eventually makes it a source of blessing for the person and his speech becomes a medication for those who are in error."

Ja'far says: "Malik ibn Dinar continues: 'Have you not seen them?' He pauses for a while and says: 'By Allah! We have certainly seen them. [They are] Hasan al-Basri, Sa'id ibn Jubayr and their like. Allah causes the speech of a single person from among them to give life to large groups of people.
Abu Nu'aym: Hilyah al-Auliya, vol 2 p.359

A'ishah (r.a.) says: There was no trait that was more wicked in the sight of the Companions of Rasulullah (s.a.w.) than dishonesty. No sooner Rasulullah (s.a.w.) learnt that one of them [Companions] had some dishonesty in him, he would work on him till he repented".

The Messenger of Allah's (s.a.w.) Advice to the Person who Complained About the Ill Treatment he received from his Relatives

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (r.a.) reports that a man once came to Rasulullaah (s.a.w.) complaining, "I have relatives who sever ties with me when I foster them, who behave ill towards me when I am good to them and who behave foolishly with me when I behave tolerantly with them." Rasulullaah's (s.a.w.) advice to him was, "If you are as you claim, then it is as if you are filling their mouth with burning ashes (they are harming themselves by behaving as they do). As long as you behave as you are doing, there shall remain with you an assistant (angel) from Allaah." (1)

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Amr (r.a.) narrates that a man came to Rasulullaah (s.a.w.) saying, "0 Rasulullaah (s.a.w.) I have relatives who severe ties with me when I attempt to foster them, who oppress me when I forgive them and who are bad to me when I am good to them. Should I do to them as they do to me?" Rasulullaah's (s.a.w.) response was, "In that case, you would all be partners (in evil). You should rather adopt the better stance and continue bonding ties because as long as you behave as you are doing, there shall remain with you an assistant (angel) from Allaah." (2)

(1) Muslim (Vol.2 Pg.315). Bukhaari has also reported the narration in his Adab (Pg.11).
(2) Ahmad. Haythami (Vol.8 Pg.154) has commented on the chain of narrators.

Kindness to Children

Abu Hurairah (r.a.) reported:

The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) kissed his grandson Al-Hasan bin `Ali (r.a.) in the presence of Al-Aqra` bin Habis. Thereupon he (Al-Aqra` bin Habis) remarked: "I have ten children and I have never kissed any one of them." The Messenger of Allah (Muhammad s.a.w) looked at him and said,

 "He who does not show mercy to others will not be shown mercy".

(Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Once while passing by three children who were out playing, Nabi (s.a.w.) indicated towards one of them and lifted him onto his mount seating the child in front of him. He then lifted the second child and seated him behind himself on the mount. Now there remained no place on the mount so he placed his hand on the head of the third child and prayed for him. He did this thrice. (Musnad-e-Ahmed). This third child was the child of Hadhrat Jafar (r.a.)

(From the book' Nabi's love for children, his teaching and nurturing them' by Moulana Abu Talha Muhammad, Izharul Hasan Mahmood)

Allah's Messenger's (s.a.w.) love for his grand-daughter Sayyidah Umamah (r.a.)

She was the daughter of the eldest daughter of Allah's Messenger, Sayyidah Zainab (r.a.). She was greatly loved by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) He did not like to separate from her even when offering prayers. It is stated in Sahih Bukhari that one one occasion, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) came to the mosque with the child Umamah on his shoulders. He offered his prayer with Umamah mounted  upon him. When he lowered for ruku' or for sajdah, he put the child gently down  and mounted her again on his shoulders when ruku and prostration had been done.
Bukhari Vol.1 p.741.  Zurqani Vol.3 P.255.

Once a golden necklace was recieved by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) as a gift from Negus (Najashi of Ethiopia). Umamah was playing in the corner of the house. He said he would give it to the most beloved person. The wives of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) thought that it would go to Sayyida Aishah (r.a.). He called Umamah near him and put the garland in her neck. Some narrations say it was a golden ring.

50 Daily Prayers

 Allah (s.w.t.) says in the Holy Qur'an

"And I (Allâh) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)."           (Holy Qur'an 51:56)

When I read this verse of the Qur'an, I remember the hadith in Bukhari about the night of Al-Isra' wal Miraj (The Messenger of Allah's  (s.a.w.) journey to the Heavens). In this hadith Allah (s.w.t.) commanded the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) to tell the Muslims to pray 50 times a day. The story of this is in the following hadith and I have put two videos below which are very interesting and informative. These videos go into more detail about Al-Isra' wal Miraj and the prayers.

Here is part of the hadith:

Narrated Anas bin Malik (r.a.)

".....Among the things which Allah revealed to him then, was: "Fifty prayers were enjoined on his followers in a day and a night."

Then the Prophet descended till he met Moses, and then Moses stopped him and asked, "O Muhammad ! What did your Lord enjoin upon you?" The Prophet replied," He enjoined upon me to perform fifty prayers in a day and a night." Moses said, "Your followers cannot do that; Go back so that your Lord may reduce it for you and for them." So the Prophet turned to Gabriel as if he wanted to consult him about that issue. Gabriel told him of his opinion, saying, "Yes, if you wish." So Gabriel ascended with him to the Irresistible and said while he was in his place, "O Lord, please lighten our burden as my followers cannot do that." So Allah deducted for him ten prayers where upon he returned to Moses who stopped him again and kept on sending him back to his Lord till the enjoined prayers were reduced to only five prayers.

Then Moses stopped him when the prayers had been reduced to five and said, "O Muhammad! By Allah, I tried to persuade my nation, Bani Israel to do less than this, but they could not do it and gave it up. However, your followers are weaker in body, heart, sight and hearing, so return to your Lord so that He may lighten your burden."

The Prophet turned towards Gabriel for advice and Gabriel did not disapprove of that. So he ascended with him for the fifth time. The Prophet said, "O Lord, my followers are weak in their bodies, hearts, hearing and constitution, so lighten our burden." On that the Irresistible said, "O Muhammad!" the Prophet replied, "Labbaik and Sa'daik." Allah said, "The Word that comes from Me does not change, so it will be as I enjoined on you in the Mother of the Book." Allah added, "Every good deed will be rewarded as ten times so it is fifty (prayers) in the Mother of the Book (in reward) but you are to perform only five (in practice)."

The Prophet returned to Moses who asked, "What have you done?" He said, "He has lightened our burden: He has given us for every good deed a tenfold reward." Moses said, "By Allah! I tried to make Bani Israel observe less than that, but they gave it up. So go back to your Lord that He may lighten your burden further." Allah's Apostle said, "O Moses! By Allah, I feel shy of returning too many times to my Lord." On that Gabriel said, "Descend in Allah's Name." The Prophet then woke while he was in the Sacred Mosque (at Mecca). "

Allah is King

Note: The attribute of seizing the earth, folding the sky, the Hand of Allah, and the like are all Truth, the reality of which is beyond our grasp as it does not have any resemblance with the attributes of creation. Allah has no resemblance to His creation; neither in His Entity, nor in His Attributes, but in words alone. Allah and His Attributes are far above the comprehension of any of His creation.

Story of a Slave Girl

 Once upon a time, Hadrat Malik b. Dinar (mercy be upon him) was walking in the streets of Basra. On the way, he happened to see a female servant walking with such pomp and show as the maidservants of kings generally do. Hadrat Malik (mercy be upon him) after witnessing the manner in which she walked, called her and said:

 ''Oh handmaid! Would your master like to sell you?'' She was surprised to hear his voice. She said ''What? Repeat it again.'' Hadrat Malik did accordingly. She said to him:

''Would a beggar like you, be able to purchase me if master agrees to sell at all?'' He replied in the affirmative and added that he could purchase a better one than she. On hearing this reply she laughed and ordered her servants to take this beggar along with them (just for making fun of him). The servants obeyed her orders accordingly.

 On reaching home she narrated all this story to her master, who too laughed boisterously and ordered to bring him (Hadrat Malik) before him. When he was brought before him, he (the master) was invested with fear and asked him: ''What do you want?'' In reply, he advised him to sell his handmaiden to him. He asked him: ''Can you pay her price?'' Hadrat Malik replied:

 ''For me, her price is not more than two stones of dates.''

 On hearing this the whole audience began to laugh. The master asked him: ''What prompted you to fix this price for her?'' He replied that there were many shortcomings in her. The master asked him to let him know these shortcomings. Hadrat Malik enumerated them thus:

''Incase she applies not perfume, her body emits a foul smell.
If she cleanses not her teeth, these begin to putrefy.
If  she combs not her hair, the dishevelled and untidy hair are infested with lice.
She on becoming a bit old, would bear the appearance of an old woman not worthy to be loved.
She menstruates.
She makes water and relieves herself. In other words she emits all sorts of filths (spittle, mucus, saliva)
She suffers from agonies and hardships.
She being much greedy, shows her love to you merely for her self interests.
she shows her love to you only for her material benefits.
Today, if any loss is incurred by her because of you, the whole edifice of her love will within no time, be crumbled down.
She is absolutely faithless and fulfills not her promise.
Her love is based on falsehood. As soon as you breathe your last, she will sit by the side of another person and sing the song of her permanent and everlasting love for him, in the same way as she did for you.''

 ''On the contrary,'' said Hadrat Malik (mercy be upon him). ''I have a handmaid a thousand times better than your handmaid. Her price is much less than hers.''

''She is made out of camphor's essence
She has been fashioned out of musk and saffron.
She is covered by pearls and light.
If her spittle is caste in saltish water, it will become sweet.
Incase she speaks to a dead man, he will be restored life.
If her wrist is shown to the sun, it will suffer darkness and eclipse.
If she visits a place of darkness, it will begin to illuminate.
If she happens to appear in the world with all her elegance, the whole world will become fragrant.
She is brought up in the gardens of musk and saffron.
She has played amidst the branches of ruby and coral (a small pearl).
Her abode is a place of great blessings.
She drinks water from Tasnim (a fountain in Paradide).
She never backs out to her words.
Her love is constant.''

 Hadrat Malik (mercy be upon him) then asked the master to let him know what handmaid is, according to price, more beneficial to him. All said unanimously that the handmaid had been more valuable about whom Hadrat Malik (mercy be upon him) had told them. He added:

''Everyone can afford to buy her at any time and in every age.''

The people asked Hadrat Malik to tell them her price. He told them:

''If they want to purchase such an important and valuable thing, they will have to spare some time at night and observe two raka's of Tahajjud prayer in order to seek the pleasure of the Almighty God;
 They shall have to invite some poor and the needy to meals at the time of eating;
 They shall have to give preference to Allah's pleasure to their own wishes;
 They shall have to remove away any troublesome thing lying in the way;
 They shall have to lead simple lives and they will have to be more anxious for the eternal abode than this mortal world.''

 Then Hadrat Malik (mercy be upon him) told them that if they could act upon this advice, they would lead an honourable life and would be blessed with honour and veneration in the Hereafter and would abide in the paradise (a place of great blessings) under the shadow of Almighty God.

 After that the master asked the maid-servant whether she had listened to the advice of the venerable old man. If so, what was her opinion. She told that the preachings of the venerable old man were true and were calculated to promote good and virtue. The master set the maid-servant free and gave her a portion of his property as a gift. He also set his slaves free and bestowed upon them some property. He donated his house and all its belongings for the welfare of the poor. After casting off his elegant dress giving it too the poor, he covered his body with a thick cloth of  a door's curtain. The maid-servant told her master that she could not live without him. After sacrificing her elegant dress and her property for the welfare of the poor, she also accompanied her master.
 Malik b. Dinar (mercy of Allah be upon him) prayed for them and departed.

 Both of them bade farewell to the worldly pleasures and dedicated themselves to the divine worship and died in that very state.
(May Allah bless them and all of us)

The Last Days

Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet of God (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observed:

''When the spoils of war will be regarded as personal property (instead of collective estate) and the things kept in trust shall be expropriated;
 when the zakat shall be regarded as an  indemnity;
 and religious knowledge shall be gained merely to serve worldly interests;
 when the husbands shall follow the counsels of their wives and shall subject their mothers to harassment;
 when men shall be thicker with their friends and estranged from their fathers;
 when mosques shall resound with the talk of the world;
 when the leaders of the tribe shall become unbelievers;
 when base people shall be appointed as leaders of nations;
 when the mischievous shall be respected on account of fear;
 when the number of singing and dancing women shall proliferate and musical instruments gain popularity;
 when posterity shall begin to despise their pious forebearers;

then at that juncture wait for the red windstorms and earthquakes;
look forward then to being buried alive in the earth and expect your appearances to be distorted, amd await the falling of stones from the skies - along with calamities, await other signs too which shall follow in rapid succession, as beads fall one after the other when the string is broken (Tirmidhi)

The last indications of the approach of  the Doomsday are these:
The first sign of the fall of doom will be that for three or four years people shall remain unaware and the worldly pleasures and lusts will be widespread.
 Early in the morning on a Friday (which will also be a day of 'Ashura) people shall engage in their daily tasks, a voice will be heard by the people. This will be the trumpet sound.
 People in all corners shall hear the voice equally clearly and they shall be wonder-struck as to what is this voice and whence it comes.
 Gradually this voice will rise hard and sharp like the thunderbolt. There shall be a great commotion among the people due to this.
 When the voice shall rise to the highest pitch, people shall start dying out of fear.
 An earthquake will come; people shall run out of their homes in fright and come into the plains.
 The wild beasts will run out of the forests in panic and rush into the crowds of people.
 The earth will divide into fissures here and there.
 The oceans will overflow their shores and inundate the habitations all around.
 The fire will die out.
 The heaviest and tallest mountains will be broken into pieces and theses pieces will fly about in fast winds like the grains of sand.
 The universe will be plunged into darkness by the rising clouds of dust and windstorms.
 The voice of doom will continue to grow harder and harder till by the impact of its terrible pitch, the skies will burst asunder and the stars will be broken into shatters.

Hudhaifa (may God be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet of God (peace be upon him) affirmed:

''The doom will not fall until the time when the most foolish person or a son of the most stupid fellow becomes the most fortunate and the richest man (i.e. until the time when the men of evil nature and foul character capture authority and rule in the world and become masters of its wealth) (Mishkat)

(Description of the end of time is from the book: The Spectacle of Death (including Glimpses of Life Beyond the Grave) by Khawaja Mohammad Islam)

Allah (s.w.t.) says in the Holy Qur'an:

“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al‑Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)” (Holy Qur'an 7:31)

The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) said:

“No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.” (Ahmad,Tirmidhi, Nasaa’i)

Ibn ‘Umar (r.a.) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said:

“The believer eats in one stomach whilst the disbeliever eats in seven.” (Bukhari (5081) and Muslim (2060))

Ibn ‘Umar (r.a.) said: A man burped in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he said: “Keep your burps away from us, for the one who eats his fill the most in this world will be hungry for the longest time on the Day of Resurrection.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2015))

It was also narrated that Aisha (r.a.) said, “The family of Muhammad never ate their fill three days in a row till the Prophet passed away.” (Bukhari)

All of Mankind are the Children of Adam and Hawwa (Eve)

People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into nations and tribes so that you should get to know one another.
In God's eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most aware of Him:
God is all knowing, all aware.

(Holy Qur'an 49:13) translated by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

Allah the Exalted declares to mankind that He has created them all from a single person, `Adam, and from that person He created his mate, Hawwa' (Eve). From their offspring He made nations, comprised of tribe, which include subtribes of all sizes. It was also said that `nations refers to non-Arabs, while `tribes refers to Arabs. Various statements about this were collected in an individual introduction from the book, Al-Inbah, by Abu `Amr Ibn `Abdul-Barr, and from the book, Al-Qasad wal-Amam fi Ma`rifah Ansab Al-Arab wal-`Ajam. Therefore, all people are the descendants of `Adam and Hawwa' and share this honor equally. The only difference between them is in the religion that revolves around their obedience to Allah the Exalted and their following of His Messenger.
